That switch from summer’s heavy humidity to fall’s cool, dry air presents one of the year's greatest skincare challenges.
As temperatures and humidity levels drop, your skin's natural barrier function shifts leaving it feeling dry and tight.
Traditional skincare wisdom suggests you should simply add a heavier moisturizer and call it a day.
At UDODI skincare, we see it as a full reset that should focus on barrier repair and nourishment.
Here's a simple breakdown of what your routine should look like this fall:
Barrier repair
Your skin barrier is your first line of defense. As you transition into Fall, your barrier may have been damaged in summer due to increased exposure to UV rays, heat, sweat, and environmental pollutants.
Use gentle cleansers to avoid stripping away the skin’s natural oils. Follow with moisturizers containing ceramides or fatty acids to help restore and strengthen the skin’s natural lipid barrier. Ingredients like niacinamide and cholesterol can also help
Skin Hydration
As the temperature drops and the air becomes cooler and drier due to indoor heating, your skin starts to lose moisture fast.
Focus on using hydrating ingredients like hyaluronic acid and glycerin. You can get yourself an effective hydrating serum to draw moisture into the skin. You can also consider using a humidifier.
Use a Rich Moisturizer
Unlike light weight summer moisturizers, fall requires richer formulations to lock in moisture.
Choose a moisturizer with ceramides, squalane, shea butter, or cholesterol to support the skin barrier and prevent further moisture loss.
Sun Protection
Even with less sun, UV rays remain active year-round and can damage skin and delay barrier repair.
Use a broad-spectrum sunscreen of SPF 30 or higher to protect your skin from long term UV damages
Texture Changes
The cool, dry air slows down your skin’s natural cell turnover, causing dead skin cells to build up more quickly on the surface leading to a dull complexion.
Incorporate gentle exfoliation 1–2 times per week using mild acids. You can also add skin brightening agents such as vitamin C
As you ease into your fall routine, keep in mind that skincare doesn’t have to be complicated, just consistent.
A little extra attention to hydration, barrier repair, and gentle renewal, your skin will maintain the glow it earned over summer while building the resilience it needs for the colder months ahead. |
