Happy Black History Month, OBU Family
The year is already off to an exciting start, and we’re only a few weeks in. I’m proud to share that I am now a Certified Laser Hair Removal Technician, Licensed Esthetician, and Esthetics Instructor—continuing to expand the level of care and results we offer at Oh Be You Facial Bar.
If there’s one thing this month reminds me of, it’s the responsibility and purpose I carry as a Black esthetician: to create skincare spaces, treatments, and experiences that truly see us, protect us, and serve us well.
For far too long, advanced aesthetic treatments weren’t designed with deeper skin tones in mind. Many of us were told to “be careful”… or even worse, “it’s not for you.”
At Oh Be You Facial Bar, we’re changing that narrative.
As we continue expanding our services, my commitment is simple: every treatment we offer must be safe, effective, and results-driven for ALL skin types and tones.
Laser Hair Removal is our newest addition—and here’s everything you need to know about it…
What Is Laser Hair Removal?
Laser hair removal is a noninvasive procedure to remove unwanted body hair.
It works by targeting the pigment in the hair follicle to reduce future growth. But because melanin exists in both the hair and the skin, the type of laser used makes all the difference.
Who Can Get Laser Hair Removal
With modern technology, lasers can safely treat very fair to deeply melanin-rich skin when performed by a trained professional using the correct settings.
For clients with albinism, laser hair removal is generally not recommended, because the treatment relies on pigment in the hair, which is typically minimal or absent. For long-term hair removal, electrolysis is a more effective option.
How should I prepare for laser hair removal?
In the weeks leading up to your procedure, avoid tanning beds and stay out of the sun as much as possible. Naturally or artificially tanned skin can make laser hair removal less effective
Shave the area that will be treated two to three days before a treatment. Laser hair removal treatments won’t work on areas where the hair is longer than a grain of rice.
Our Laser Technology
We will be using top-line laser machines that include two powerful options:
Alexandrite (755 nm) – Highly effective for lighter to medium tones, offering fast, efficient results with excellent comfort and coverage
Nd:YAG (1064 nm) – A gold-standard choice for all skin tones, especially medium to deeper tones. Its longer wavelength penetrates safely, bypassing superficial melanin so your skin stays protected while hair follicles are targeted.
We’ll be offering for all skin types on Fitzpatrick
If you’re not familiar, the Fitzpatrick scale is a professional system used to classify skin tones from very fair (Type I) to deeply melanin-rich (Type VI).
It helps providers determine how skin responds to sun and, more importantly, how it should be treated safely with laser technology.
We will be using advanced technology to safely and effectively treat every skin type on the Fitzpatrick scale.
More details about the procedure — including how sessions work, pricing, preparation guidelines, and booking dates — will be communicated very soon.
We’re taking our time to ensure everything is seamless, safe, and ready for you. Stay tuned… we can’t wait to share what’s next!
